GREAT WORK, SUMMIT LEADERSHIP!

It appears our lines of communication were effective this past weekend as dangerous road conditions forced us to cancel Sunday activities.  Thank you for contacting your classes and helping us avoid any confusion.

CONFIDENT IGNORANCE

Mark Twain famously quipped, “Get your facts first, then you can distort them as you please. All you need in this life is ignorance and confidence, and then success is sure.”

“Confident ignorance” is how I’ve come to describe those who make baseless claims as though they are factual.  This video clip (under 7 minutes) is a perfect example.

Here’s the context:  The young man, a self-proclaimed (and extremely self-assured) scientist and atheist, in preparation for his actual question, makes numerous claims in rapid-fire fashion.  This is common practice for some atheists & skeptics since it squeezes out room for any intelligent response, as well as using their “confident ignorance” as a tool to intimidate timid believers into believing that what they are spouting off is actually true.

The wise believer simply waits for the nonsense to stop and offers an intelligent response, which is what Ravi Zacharias does here in respectful, yet devastating, fashion.

QUOTE of the WEEK

“Here’s a side to the Christmas story that isn’t often told:  those soft little hands, fashioned by the Holy Spirit in Mary’s womb, were made so that nails might be driven through them…..Jesus was born to die.”  John MacArthur, God With Us: The Miracle of Christmas

THIS SUNDAY, 12/9

Choral Musical Presentation:  “Come and See; Go and Tell”

Hats off to Glenna Applewhite and all of our instrumentalists and vocalists, as well as our amazing Audio-Visual Team for their hard work in preparation to magnify Christ through music.

Both AM worship services – 9:15 & 10:45

All SUMMIT Group Leaders:

Clearly, we don’t know if the forecast winter weather this weekend will be severe or mild.  (We’ve all experienced the frantic meteorologist warning of 10 inches of snow and ice only to wake up and the roads are clear and it’s 60 degrees.)

What we do know is that we will be watching it closely.  Should it end up severe enough to necessitate the altering or cancelling of Sunday’s normal schedule we will let you know asap.

Please keep an eye on KCBD Channel 11, our BHBC web site, and this e-news.

Hopefully, all will be clear and safe for us to gather together and worship Christ this Sunday morning.  Nevertheless, be safe in your travels.

We presently have two families available for (and in need of) adoption.

If your SUMMIT Group would like to adopt a family and purchase gifts, simply contact the church office at 795-5261, or email Mike Lewis.

NOEL

I led the song last week in the 9:15am service.  I love it.  A lot.  Enjoy… (by the way, the word “noel” simply means “Christmas.”)

I GOT MARRIED.  AGAIN.

Over the Thanksgiving holiday, I followed through with a lesson I’ve learned over time:  it’s never too late to do the right thing.  I had never actually proposed to Michelle – until a few weeks ago.  You can read all about it here.

CHRISTMAS EVE SARAJEVO

This Sunday morning, weather permitting, the Praise Team and I will be performing Trans-Siberian Orchestra’s Christmas Eve Sarajevo.  Performing this song at Christmas time has become somewhat of a tradition for us.

Below is a video I took with my phone when I attended the Trans-Siberian Orchestra concert here in Lubbock at the Spirit Arena a year ago.  We don’t have the lighting resources they have, and we won’t be using the pyrotechnics they use at the end. 🙂  (Pardon the people walking in front of me at the beginning.)

THE STORY BEHIND THE ANGEL-TOPPER ON YOUR TREE

In a single afternoon during a long ago late December…

Several of Santa’s elves got sick slowing toy production to a crawl and Santa began feeling that pre-Christmas-pressure.

A few minutes later, Mrs. Claus broke the news to Santa that her mother was coming to visit.

To blow off some steam and cool off, he went to the stables to harness the reindeer only to discover three of them had gotten out, nowhere to be found.

When he began to load the sleigh one of the floorboards cracked and the toy bag fell to the ground, scattering all the toys.

Having reached his emotional limit, Santa retreated to his workshop for a warm glass of cider to calm his nerves. That’s when he discovered the elves had drunk all the cider. To make matters worse he dropped his glass, shattering it into a million pieces.

Just then, there was a knock on his workshop door.

Angry, frustrated and “up to here” with everything that had gone wrong, he swung open the door to find a smiling angel who cheerfully said, “Merry Christmas, Santa! Isn’t it a lovely day? I have a beautiful tree here for you. Where would you like me to stick it?”

And so began the tradition of the little angel on top of the Christmas tree.

QUOTE of the WEEK

CHRISTMAS TRUTH

LAUGHTER IS GOOD MEDICINE

My favorite Far Side Christmas cartoon…

And a bonus…

A teacher was finishing up a lesson on the joys of discovery and the importance of curiosity. “Where would we be today,” she asked, “if no one had ever been curious?” One child innocently replied, “In the Garden of Eden?”
