BIBLICAL EVIDENCE FROM ARCHAEOLOGY

Sure, every city and/or item in the ancient writings of Scripture hasn’t been discovered.  But this we know:  not a single artifact discovered has contradicted the writings of Scripture.  The significance of this point must not be minimized.

For your files, I submit to you a recent article citing the discovery of a 2,600 year old “stamp seal” bearing the name of King David’s son.  You can read that article here.

THE  GOD IN OUR PAIN

Paul wrote, “…the Spirit helps us in our weakness. We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us through wordless groans.

The Dutch theologian and author. Henri Nouwen, once said, “Sometimes, the only prayer I can utter is, ‘Lord, help me.’”  A picture really does say a thousand words…

QUOTE of the WEEK

“We are most like beasts when we kill. We are most like men when we judge. We are most like God when we forgive.” – William Arthur Ward

And a bonus (I saw this on the wall of the elementary school my wife, Michelle, teaches at):

LAUGHTER IS GOOD MEDICINE

GRACE NOTES:  When God says, “Have it your way.”

God’s love is inexhaustible.  But, being a just God, there comes a point when finally says, “Do you really want to ruin your life?  Have it your way.”

CLEMSON HEAD FOOTBALL COACH, DABO SWINNEY & HIS FAITH IN CHRIST

This article addresses a debate I’ve had with friends of mine.  And there are times when the issue has gotten muddied in the water.

But my friend from way back, Dr. Jeff Iorg, president of Gateway Seminary, has a way here of stating the law clearly and succinctly.

Jesus never once imposed the gospel on a single person. And neither has Coach Swinney.  Clemson is the reigning College Football Champion.

Read the brief article here.

DOES GOD EXIST? IF SO, WHAT EVIDENCE DO WE HAVE FOR HIS EXISTENCE?

Two solid videos here to arm you with confidence and, once again, strengthen your faith as you are reminded that the evidence for the existence of God is overwhelming.  Both videos include Eric Metaxas, a brilliant NYT best-selling author and a devoted follower of Christ.

The first video is his latest video clip from Prager U.  Mathematical physicist, Eric Weinstein, tweeted he disagrees with this argument for God’s existence. I would like to hear his reasons.  The video is only 5 minutes.  View the video on the Prager U website here.

This second video (below) is from 2015.  I’ve have in my library – and have read – the book to which Metaxas refers in this interview – his most recent book at the time titled, “Miracles.”  The interview is only 3 minutes long.

Remember: every worldview, including atheism, requires a leap of faith.  Enjoy, nw

QUICK SERVING OF SOUL FOOD:

On the book of Job, chapters 1-2…

In his book, The Bible Jesus Read, Philip Yancey writes:

“Nowhere else in the Bible are we more clearly informed of a realm beyond our own – one we cannot see but, nonetheless, exists.

“Like Job, we live in ignorance of what is going on ‘behind the curtains.’ Job reminds us that the small history of mankind on this earth takes place within the large drama of the history of the universe. We are foot-soldiers in a spiritual battle with cosmic significance.

“In the words of C.S. Lewis, ‘There is no neutral ground in the universe – every square inch, every split second, is claimed by God and counter-claimed by Satan.”

Perhaps you’ve never had the unfortunate opportunity to develop a relationship with a narcissist.  Consider yourself blessed.

I worked with a textbook narcissist once.  To borrow a line I once heard in a movie, he was “so oily you could fry chicken on him.”

I thought this article was very solid.

LAUGHTER IS GOOD MEDICINE

GRACE NOTES: He’s Not a Tame Lion

We think of Jesus as a meek and mild gentleman sitting down petting a lamb and telling sweet stories to children.  The Bible sets things straight.

HOPE & HELP FOR THOSE CONSIDERING SUICIDE

Immediately below is the video from the community-wide event at which I spoke this past Tuesday.  (Crestview Baptist Church in Midland is Jason Atchley’s home church.)

The reason I am including it here is because I had no idea they were videoing my presentation.

That said, I am sharing with you the link.  Although the video doesn’t include my slides or two video clips I used, all the information and tools for helping those who are at-risk are included.

If you are severely depressed and/or suicidal (or if you know someone who may be) please watch this.

I stand today to tell you the truth: there is hope and help in abundance. You are loved. You are not alone. Talk to someone. Your loss would be devastating. You are going to make it.

The pastor who hosted the event texted me as I was driving home from Midland and wrote, “My phone is blowing up with people thanking us for offering this event.  The video has already been viewed 215 times.”  That was an hour after we concluded.  Once again, Christ was mightily at work.

A brief video of a woman who lost her son to suicide begins at the 12 minute mark. The woman in the video is one of the Admin. Asst’s at the church that hosted this event. Her son took his life April 1, 2018.

I begin speaking immediately after her story.  For Narnia.  For Jordan.

NEED A “HAPPY BREAK?”  THIS IS MIND-BLOWING.

World class pianist Ed Clute came to tune the piano at Hudson Manor this morning and played a little “Sweet Georgia Brown” when he finished. Imagine if he had warmed up a little first! Oh, did I mention he is blind?

QUOTE of the WEEK

“God has infinite attention to spare for each one of [us]. [We] are as much alone with him as if [we] were the only being he had ever created.” – C.S. Lewis   (“How precious to me are your thoughts, God! How vast is the sum of them! Were I to count them, they would outnumber the grains of sand…” (Psalm 139:17-18)

And a bonus…

“We may be, in part, products of our past: but if the gospel is true, we do not need to be prisoners of it.” Andy Bannister

LAUGHTER IS GOOD MEDICINE

This so incredibly random.  But I laughed out loud when I saw it.

And a bonus… (posted on my FB page a couple of years ago)

GRACE NOTES:  Discouraged?  You’re in Good Biblical Company.

One of the many things I love about the Bible is that it’s unsanitized, unedited. It covers the highest of highs and lowest of lows.

Just know that many “heroes of the faith” suffered from discouragement and depression. We have an entire Old Testament book titled, “Lamentations.”

What is critical is that, in the pain & darkness, we, by faith, focus on what is true: the Word of God.

For the sad & discouraged… Discouragement is one of the enemy’s most powerful and effective weapons.

“Why am I discouraged? Why is my heart so sad? I will put my hope in God! I will praise him again— my Savior and my God! Now I am deeply discouraged, but I will remember you.”  Psalms‬ ‭42:5-6‬ ‭NLT

Ordination Service for Mike Lewis & Tom Heath

What does it mean to be ordained?  (Good question)

The official definition is:  to invest officially with ministerial authority.

Translation:  to affirm and celebrate, as a local church, the ministry assignment clearly given to an individual.

Mike & Tom would be no less pastors if they were never ordained by a local church.  This service merely invites Bacon Heights to affirm the call from God that is clear upon their lives and celebrate with them that call.

Lastly, closely associated with this affirmation is the phrase “laying on of hands.”  Taken from both Old & New Testament passages, this act was used to confer upon a individual a blessing and affirmation of God’s call on their life.

A reception will follow.

SUMMIT LEADERSHIP WEB PAGE

Several have emailed me updates to their small group information.  Please, if you haven’t yet, check out your class’s information by clicking here and let me know if anything needs to be adjusted.  Thank you!

ALSO, please mark Sunday evening, Oct. 20th, on your calendar for our very first Summit Leadership Appreciation Banquet.  Spouses are invited! Childcare is provided – we need to know asap who needs childcare.

OCTOBER 13th: MINISTRY FAIR!

I am the staff liaison to our Missions Team.  We’ve discussed the number of ministries within Bacon Heights that, most likely, the majority of our people don’t know about.

On Oct. 13th, Food Trucks will, again, be stationed in our south parking lot so our folks can conveniently grab a bite and visit tables throughout our FLC that have information about everything from Friends of God to Summit Groups to Elevate to Aspire to GriefShare to… well, you get the picture.

Come and celebrate what Christ is doing in our midst!  More info to come as the event nears.

HAS SCIENCE DISCOVERED GOD?

Many will never face up to the overwhelming evidence for the existence of God.  But, even the former giant of the atheistic world, Antony Flew, after finally conceding the existence of God, said, “I must abide by Plato’s Socrates who said, ‘We must follow the evidence wherever it leads.”  That evidence led Flew to the only logical conclusion:  God exists.

Below are two 5-minute video clips.

The first clip explores on the logic of 17th century German scientist, Gottfried Leibniz, a prominent German polymath and one of the most important logicians, mathematicians and natural philosophers of the Enlightenment.

The second clip is contemporary, but a little harder to grasp.  Additionally, the host talks a little fast and is sometimes difficult to understand.  Don’t hesitate to watch it a couple of times (it’s only 5 minutes.)  This clip is based on the hard science of MIT grad, Gerald Schroeder, a scientist with over thirty years of experience in research and teaching. He earned his Bachelor’s, Master’s, and Doctorate degrees all at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

As is my practice, my goal is to provide you with resourced information to help you grow deep in your faith, as well as be able to more confidently engage in intelligent dialogue where Christianity is concerned.

Has science discovered God?  No. God desires us to ultimately come to him by faith.  Ravi Zacharias brilliantly put it this way:

“God has put enough into this world to make faith in Him a most reasonable thing. But He has left enough out to make it impossible to live by sheer reason alone. Faith and reason must always work together in that plausible blend.”

What science has done is discovered overwhelming evidence of his existence so that the most jaded of skeptics is without excuse.  Enjoy, nw

WE NEVER KNOW…

We put our best faces on at church.  And that’s why I often mention something similar to the quote below during our greeting time on Sunday mornings.  The person struggling this week may be you.  Never forget, you are not alone.  “The battle is the Lord’s.”

QUOTE of the WEEK

C.S. Lewis was one of the greatest thinkers of the 20th century.  Not only a prolific author, but an Oxford don and, as a former atheist, a consummate defender of the Christian faith.  Below is not only one of my favorite Lewis quotes, but also a wonderful food-for-thought for lost or seeking friends and/or members of your class.
